So this week was …….., meh!
Okay, I couldn’t do much this week, cause I was really freaked out about two interviews lined up. What I did do was, update my Thesis Draft and update my Thesis Outline.
Heres the updated link to me thesis draft, it got 2 more pages Yay!, okay not quite.
And here’s a few updates for my thesis outline, based on the discussion I had with Gwen. (She’s awesome, and I want an autograph of her in her book)
Okay thats all
But next week, I promise, things will be awesome.
‘The end is near’
That’s what came in my head, hello there btw, I just have some news for you.
The latest update on the tech front is this, Apple Watch has been integrated to the iPhone Application.
Video to be uploaded soon
I also drafted out a few things
Here’s my latest draft to my thesis outline
Also, here is the latest draft on my thesis paper
Lastly, I found this really cool ted talk
Hi,
Back after Spring Break here, and a few things on the plate.
To start off, Github profiles have been created for all test cases
Here is the test Github repositories for VR Views
https://github.com/akshaytiyer/Vacation360
And here’s a feature for Ricoh Theta 360 SDK Test
https://github.com/akshaytiyer/RicohThetaTest
The final application will be made under this Github
https://github.com/akshaytiyer/Home
A few additional features were developed during this week. While you are under VR View, you can simply tap and move towards the next Image, and Play/Pause a video.
This week brings back one thing, Live 360 Video Streaming is happening, if not in the direct way, since YouTube has not provided support for VR View in their API. Hence due to unfortunate circumstances, the app will redirect to YouTube.
The good news it, you would be able to access the live stream only through a specific access code, which needs to be entered through the mobile application. That way, individuals with no access to the YouTube Access Code, will not be able to access the URL.
This week had development happening, nothing has been uploaded on my Open Source Github yet, the same will soon be up and available for sharing early next week.
The prototype got updated, since we have Live 360 Happening, Yay!.
Here’s an updated link to the prototype. The names back to ‘Home’ since my accountability partner recommended to keep it connected to your hometown.
Here is an updated YouTube Video of me testing out a VR Cardboard View Feature in iOS
Here is my test on the Theta 360 API and how it works
I just had a brilliant experience working with the Theta 360 API and I would be happy to share it with you.
Speaking of Live, I still need to record someone going live in and work around it
I would be using an open source tool for Live Streaming via YouTube for my prototype
It provides you with tools that assist in live streaming.
Since Live Streaming was made possible, I would be demoing a working version of the same.
Lastly,
Here would be my mission statement
“I am building a mobile virtual reality application to address the problem of longing for ones home, that arises amongst millennials. I think it will alleviate their longing, and that’s important because millennials will feel more connected to their home.”
That’s all for Science Fair Week, see you all in Spring Break Week.
For this week I began focussing my attention on the outline that needs to be fulfilled. The same link will keep updating as time progresses and more information gets collected and constrained in a singular place. Thesis Outline
Also, work began on creating the mobile application, here is the Github link for the application, the working model which I plan on achieving before March 8th would comprise of all the basic functionality such as viewing images and videos in virtual reality and if possible capturing data through a 360 Camera. The working model might be contained in a single application of showcased as two different applications for the showcase next week.
https://github.com/akshaytiyer/MemoryBox
MemoryBox is a tentative title associated with this application, the same will get updated as time progresses.
“How can migrated millennials, feel more connected with their family and friends?”
Its still a work in progress and I would be speaking to my Thesis Instructor and Thesis Advisor About the same
This week turned out to be having a lot of research on Virtual and Real spaces and the emotional aspect associated with each space. This week also turned out to be fun with one book in particular, Architecture from the Outside, it was a brilliant read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The weekend was pretty out of schedule this time, especially because there was an immediate Hackathon at NYU, which pretty much summed up my Weekend, and hence, the amount of research delved in this week was pretty mediocre, need to cope up next week.
The value of places in virtual space depends on the detailed character of their spatiality, the way their textures fit with their social use, and on the complexity and humaneness of the actions guided by their social norms. Some thoughts, which felt refreshed by this article.

Another of this article also talks about the reality of virtual and real spaces

Also, I started a good read this week on Architecture from the Outside, I haven’t drilled much deep into the concepts associated with the same, but it sure was relevant enough. Here is an outline of the same.

Working with tech this week
I played more with the 360 Camera and Understood its working and functionalities, started off programming an application and stuff.
That’s all for this week
This was definitely a heave research week, the week started off early, with me meeting up with my Thesis Writing advisor Gwen, who assisted me in drilling down a few concepts and understanding the way in which the system works. We started off strong by working on the concepts of home and what are the various questions which come up in an individuals mind when we look at Home.
The same was then broken down to the most relevant question and answers relating to the same were thought about.
Answers were brought into place and this made it easier to drill down those options which seem relevant to every individual. While I constantly try analyzing the term ‘What is ‘Home’?’. I finally drilled down towards a few ideas which helped me.
What makes home, ‘Home’? Home is where people can feel connected with their family, culture and their lives from childhood till date, with no barrier for language.
360 Images and 360 Video
Technology is evolving, and keeps evolving. And as it evolves, the ways in which moments and memories are being captured also keeps evolving. Initially people used to store photographs and videos in the form of physical images, which later got transferred to digital images. Today the world is moving towards Virtual Reality and 360 Imagery. And so I began researching on the evolution of media and how the world is looking at it today.
I began watching Ways of Seeing by John Berger, which talks about how users have evolved in perceiving art and media.
This TED Talk was also interesting in explaining how VR is the future and it provides users with an immersive experience, but something is missing and that is making it available to the consumer audience. With Google Cardboard and improved quality of 360 Cameras, people are slowly adopting the technology in their daily lives.
I also enjoyed reading this article
Osmose: Towards Broadening the Aesthetics of Virtual Reality
It talks about Virtual Reality in quite early stages of technology evolution, was indeed a great read.
